Week 19 marks the release of our thirtieth song as a band. "Wake Yourself" has a number of new elements that we've been cultivating. The Odyssey is ever-changing.By Seanwinter light: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9iqEBAilu8"Wake Yourself" by The Theory of Funkativity Verse: Meet me outside By the stained glass window It was your favorite Your friends are all there Some cells are missing While others have shattered Most drained of color And all worse for wear They'll help you wither They'll help you melt Follow their lead While taking good care You have to make sure that You don't take forever Time on its own Won't heal the tear Transition: Wake yourself Wake yourself Bring yourself to life Wake yourself Prepare yourself Don't listen to The lies Verse: The sound of wings beating Up in the rafters The cries of the hungry mouths Filling the air Home of the weak Indecisive and lonely Credit cards answering Their simple prayers I stood in line I have a number Clean off our bodies Then go upstairs Meet me outside By the stained glass window It was your favorite Your friends are all there Transition: Wake yourself Wake yourself Bring yourself to life Wake yourself Prepare yourself Don't listen to The lies Chorus: Can you feel it Can you hear it The new age genesis Drawing near No need to worry No need to fear Whenever you call me I will appear Transition: Wake yourself Wake yourself Bring yourself to life Wake yourself Prepare yourself Don't listen to The lies Wake yourself Wake yourself Bring yourself to life Wake yourself Prepare yourself Don't listen to The lies Chorus: Can you feel it Can you hear it The new age genesis Drawing near No need to worry No need to fear Whenever you call me I will appearBy Michael"Wake Yourself" was a battle. It's the first song where I wrote a keyboard part first. The process proved to be completely different, which was both refreshing and stressful. I was freed from my guitar-driven writing habits, but I struggled to figure out out what riffs and instruments to add and remove. The song follows an alternative structure. There is a transitional part that acts like a false chorus the first time through. The second time through, the actual chorus follows the transition. The song changes key a number of times, but no matter how far it wanders it always returns home. The intro, bridge, and outro form a narrative of their own. The bridge begins the same as the intro but varies towards the end in order to lead directly into the final transition. The outro begins with a new theme but winds its way back to repeat the verse motif in the original key.By MichaelOn this song I combined all of the instrumental tones from the last few weeks. The Kay archtop with the whammy, the White Falcon through the DeVille, the Mellotron, and the standard Telecaster tone all have significant roles. The radio noise and reversed guitar line at the end are an homage to the Magical Mystery Tour.
