The turkey harvest is complete. The band is in session. Week 23 is upon us, and our new song is entitled "Fooled Again."
You may recall being promised "exciting announcements" in the post from two weeks ago. Have no fear. They are still in the works and very near completion... perhaps only days away assuming Steve Jobs is kind to us.

Who took my vitamins?
I said.....WHO TOOK MY GODDAMN VITAMINS?
No one.....? Yeah...right....
I see how it is. Oh, I see JUST FINE, thank you. Y'all come in here. Touch my things. Rearrange my furniture when I'm not looking. Put fake facial hair on my indoor plants. Funny, right? Yeah. HA-HA. I'm on to you. I'm on to ALL OF YOU.
Stay out of my room! Stay away from my stuff! Stay away from me!
You're not helping.
I've had enough.
Goodbye.
"Fooled Again"
by The Theory of Funkativity
Verse:
When are you coming over
You said yesterday
Can't keep it straight anymore
It's getting too confusing
Ok, we're done already
Can't play this waiting game
Not if i want to sleep at night
Like a human being
I swear we'll all forgive you
You can't let this go on
I can feel that we are
Slowly growing apart
I'm certain now that we're
Growing apart
Chorus:
I'm fooled again
I'm fooled again
I could've sworn
That you and I were
Best of friends
When did we go wrong
Verse:
I'm mad about what's missing
Can't keep from wanting you
Give me something in return
As collateral
Am I an easy target
Or, am I missing things
I'm so easy to convince
It's my own damn fault
Second chances add up
In double digits now
I'm telling this to you
Because I really care
I'm saying it out loud
Because I really care
Chorus:
I'm fooled again
I'm fooled again
When did we end
When did we end
I could've sworn that
You and I were best of friends
When did we go wrong
Chorus:
Fooled me again
Fooled me again
Tell me when did we end
When did we end
How long were you gonna let me
Think that I was the exception
Can you see your problem
Are you crying out for help?
I swear that I'll forgive you
For what you've done

I wanted the verse to have a purely melodic focus. The guitar and bass are equal voices set against each other in competing motion. It's the kind of improvised interplay we used frequently on our Self-Titled album, but it's set to the direction of our recent music.
The chorus uproots the tonal center established in the verse. The melodic guitar from the verse breaks apart into a dark, rhythmically alternating chordal line. The bass compliments the alternation with a series of upwards slides.
The bass mirrors the guitar solo during the bridge. It seems befitting of the lyrical theme to have a brief instance of cohesion to contrast the competitive interplay in the verse.

The Kay archtop treated with WH-1 Whammy has made an appearance in many of our recent songs, but this was the first time I tracked a chordal part using that combination. The Whammy is notorious for having pitch tracking issues on chordal lines. Playing multi-note parts results in a distinctive warble as the pedal tries to correctly translate the pitch.
In the transition leading up to the chorus, the guitar begins to shift from a single note melody into a chordal line. This is when the Whammy artifacts start to kick in. It made for a very bittersweet tone. It's clanky and full-bodied a bit of a dissonant warble. I shaped the chorus around that guitar tone.
