There is no longer any doubt... winter has arrived. Over the past week we had one of the greatest SoCal storms of our lifetime. It rained for a week straight, which never happens out here. Roofs are leaking, roads are flooding, and we're doing everything we can to stay dry. It's been a real adventure. If you listen closely, you might even hear some rainfall in the background of our new song, "Set You Off."

The song is built around a droning open chord that keeps the verse rooted. On top of this appear a series of big, brief instrumental swells capped by a distorted multi-part harmony. The acoustic guitars break their strumming pattern to mirror the swells, chiming in each time with a heavy strum. For the most part, the instrumentals break free during the chorus, but the stationary backup harmonies echo the stubborn immobility of the verse.

This was the first time I've included an acoustic lead. I wanted the part to be beefy but still cut through the mix. I ended up compressing it hard - to the point of distortion - with the Waves CLA-76. It made for an interesting tone. Very big with a smooth chime. The instrumental swells land on top of it, but I like how the parts trade off in that way.
