Harmonically, the verse is about as simple as we get. Instrumentally... the opposite. It was an interesting challenge working to make the piece interesting within that simple harmonic framework. As with the last few songs, instruments are dropping out and rejoining in unexpected places. It makes certain parts of the verse feel like a mini bridge.
The pattern of structural anomalies continued as well. I'm always amazed at how easily sections that, on paper, are of completely nonsensical lengths, become right within the context of a song. The fact that I can give Sean a demo of a track like this and have him immediately understand what the hell is going on is a testament to that fact... or possibly to his listening abilities.

I spent hours and hours moving a mic around our room trying to find the best distance miked tone for the main rhythm guitar. In the end I trashed the distance track altogether. There's just not a lot of room for a distant reverberant guitar sound in our songs. I prefer to leave the extra space open or fill it with other instruments instead of making the guitar overly bulky.
